In a lot of communities across the United States convenience has replaced quality. Americans find themselves eating fast food for many of their meals and have become the leaders in obesity across the globe. This problem has led to many health challenges in our country and this is even more evident in poorer communities where access to good medical care is extremely limited. Peace4Kids recognizes this trend and has designed its Athletic/Nutrition program to help educate and engage today's generation of youth so that the same health challenges do not befall them. Peace4kids Athletic/Nutrition program engages not only the physical understanding of the human body but teaches children the meta-physical aspects as well. It is our intention to help children understand how to maintain a healthy lifestyle regardless of what their life experience may dictate. Through classes such as yoga, and tai chi, students are given the opportunity to learn how to manage the stress in their lives, which can be unprecedented for foster youth. In addition, a series of different sports classes helps the students to learn activities that are normally not afforded them as a result of a lack of funding in schools and an unavailability of diverse options in their community. There is also the need for students to learn about healthy meals, nutrition, and proper hygiene, so each child participates in a cooking and nutrition class for 8 weeks out of the year. We also ensure that our teens have the proper health information by keeping them updated with medical advancements and providing them with information on how to prevent disease. Peace4kids believes that it is through the educating of our young that we as a country can change the outcomes of our poor health and nutrition.
