In the Creative Education program children are given the opportunity to uncover hidden talents and gifts and develop them into a lifelong practice through the guidance of nurturing professionals. Each weekend, Peace4Kids provides free creative education classes designed to reach over 100 participants from ages 8-13. The projects encourage the children to explore self-expression as a means to establish their own individuality.

Many of the courses we provide are in the areas of health, nutrition, sports, computers, and the arts. In the classes, the children learn within a context of fun, developmentally appropriate activities. For example, the children can choose a cooking class where they will learn concepts such as healthy eating, cleaning food, washing hands, measurement, food groups, and how to cook the food. Peaceful conflict resolution is an overt theme of every creative education course at Peace4Kids. The children create and commit to a Peace Contract that provides them with guidelines for living peacefully in an often violent world.

Our philosophy is rooted in choice and a sense of permanency. Based on the notion that foster youth lack opportunities to make good choices in life, the notion of “choice” is instilled in every facet of the Peace4Kids program. Choice has been stripped away from these children, as they are moved constantly. This lack of control over their destiny leads to an inability to make other important decisions about their health, well-being, life, and social situations. Through our program, we provide a context for these children to make their own decisions and discover the positive outcomes of those choices. Among our intended outcomes is that youth make positive choices that avoid violence and promote healthier lifestyles.

Camping Trips
Each summer the children involved in the Peace4Kids programs have the opportunity to go on camping trips to Catalina Island, a horse ranch, the mountains, the Angeles National Forest or Zuma Beach. On the trips the children go hiking, learn how to snorkel, kayak, swim and surf. On the trips, the children learn peaceful ways to interact with peers. Children, whose lives may have been filled with abuse and chaos greatly benefit from an anxiety-free summer camp experience. We offer children a stress-free, serene environment in which they feel safe to take risks that will build courage, character, self-esteem and confidence.
